About Practical Training Inc.

Who We Are:

Tom Hayden

Thomas (Tom) Hayden came to PTI after 32 years in Law Enforcement with both the City of Salem (Va.) Police Dept. and retiring from the Virginia Beach Police Dept at the rank of Sergeant. During his tenure in Law Enforcement Tom lectured in officer safety and traffic related classes at both the Roanoke City and Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Training Centers. He has acted as a mentor to a number of officers and was charged with providing continuing education and supervision to officers under his command.

After retirement Tom took on the challenge of developing a Risk Management Program for a Virginia Beach-based hotel management group. As Director of Risk Management he was responsible for the safety programs of 11 hotels in the Virginia and North Carolina region.

In 2011 Tom was paired with Kathy Whatley to teach several CPR and related safety courses. It was quickly discovered that both shared a passion for the subject matter, while at the same time they believed the best way to conduct meaningful teaching was to make it fun for the student. With that thought in mind PTI was formed.

On a personal note: Tom is a member of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, a past President of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, a member of Lodge number 8 of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a past Master of Virginia Beach Masonic Lodge 274. His wife Lois currently serves with the City of Virginia Beach Police Dept.

Kathy Whatley

Kathy Whatley came to PTI after being in the Education field for 13 years. She taught Art, Music, Physical Education and Special Education. Through the years she taught grades Pre-3 through 12th grade. She began the safety program at her husband’s company in 2001 when the requirements for OSHA were becoming stricter and more enforced in the construction field. She trained and certified not only those who were employed by her husband but also other construction companies who needed CPR and First Aid training.

It was not long after getting her certification that she realized her passion for the subject matter. She began to teach not only construction companies, but branched out into the medical community. After teaching hundreds of students in the medical fields, she had a growing respect for the providers, and developed the desire to help the community as well. In 2007, she went back to school and got her EMT certification.

Kathy and Tom began PTI on the idea that people are not drones to be taught in one particular manner but individuals deserving individual attention. They quickly discovered an engaging class was an enjoyable class! That is philosophy that PTI was founded on. Fun engaging classes, with the retention that gives the learner confidence.

Kathy is a member of the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad and also enjoys her 4 children in her “spare” time. Education is something she believes in and is working her way up the ladder in educational classes to better suit you … our students!
